Natural World Meets the New City

Shelter: More than a Roof above Our Heads
Our Cumulative Protection From the Elements, Our own little habitat

Most people in the big cities today, think of shelter as a: condo, house, apartment, even mansions, but shelter is more than that. A shelter is a developed form of protection from the elements that took the length of evolution to be created. For people, its practically now our own little habitat having satisfied many of our needs. Yet, for the rest of earth's inhabitants a shelter is purely for protection and survival. Its where everything goes to escape the rain, heat, and cold; its where we go to hide from danger or unwanted encounters; its where we feel at ease...at home. Yet, as with many necessities, it is lacking or lost when either you are amidst poverty, some unfortunate circumstance, or when the force of nature takes it away. That is why there are locations called "shelters," for people who may have had the misfortune of losing their home.

More About Shelters

Everyone knows shelter is very important. So do the little critters that live among us. Learn from them, the many forms of shelter and how shelter was developed through the ages.

The Basic Shelter for People--Home

Yeah, I know. I have overlooked our homes. Our home. Wow, nowadays our home is taken for granted, to some it's even an unbearable hell. In the Paleolithic Era, our home was a temporary cave or hut made of animal hides and woven plant matter, since pro-humans tended to migrate often. However, thank god, the Neolithic Era brought forth the first forms of permanent settlement--sure it was still huts, but way more comfortable and actual villages were made. When metal was found, our houses began to be sturdier, more efficient, and larger. Now our homes are: sturdy, convenient, technologically safe, sturdy, durable, and larger. Homes are also self-expressive by design, and culturally set up, which tends to be what most people just look at; however, they don't take the time to think about what would happen if their home was taken away by one situation or another and most of the time, don't prepare or get informed. That is an issue that requires immediate priority.
